I had the privilege of photographing Cameron and Grayson's engagement session at Papago Park in Phoenix on a scorching June afternoon. Although temperatures were pushing 110°F, you would never know it from the photos. These two never let the heat slow them down and were absolutely adorable together from beginning to end.
One of my favorite things about this session was how effortlessly natural they were in front of the camera. Some couples need a little time to warm up, but Cameron and Grayson immediately settled into simply enjoying each other's company. That always leads to the most genuine, authentic photographs.

As we explored Papago Park, we captured a variety of romantic moments—from walking hand in hand along the desert trails to quiet embraces beneath the iconic red sandstone buttes. One of my favorite moments happened after Cameron gently kissed Grayson on the forehead. They touched noses, Grayson couldn't help but smile, and just seconds later they leaned in for a kiss. It was one of those completely unscripted moments that perfectly captured their relationship.

One of my favorite moments happened after Cameron gently kissed Grayson on the forehead. They touched noses, Grayson couldn't help but smile, and just seconds later they leaned in for a kiss. It was one of those completely unscripted moments that perfectly captured their relationship.

Of course, we also made time to photograph Grayson's beautiful engagement ring. The details of her ring were absolutely stunning, and close-up photographs like these always help tell the complete story of an engagement.
Throughout the session, we mixed romantic portraits with playful moments. We walked arm in arm, bumped hips while walking, and did one of my favorite prompts—the "drunk walk." It always gets couples laughing because they have to lean into each other while pretending they've had one too many drinks. Prompts like these help couples relax, enjoy the experience, and create authentic moments that feel natural instead of posed.

Another pose I always love is when the man embraces his fiancée from behind while she reaches back to hold his hands. It is called the "T Pose" and it is one of my favorite poses! It's simple, intimate, and timeless. During this session, I also introduced a pose I've recently started incorporating, where Cameron stood behind Grayson, the spread their arms out and then come in and the man wraps his arms around her waist, and they crossed their hands together before sharing a kiss. I loved how those images turned out and will definitely be adding this pose to future sessions.
No engagement session is complete without a piggyback ride. It's always one of the most fun parts of the evening. While Grayson was on Cameron's back, I asked her to whisper one of the things she loves most about him. The genuine smiles and laughter that followed were absolutely priceless.
During Arizona summers, I like to split my engagement sessions into two 30-minute segments. Instead of photographing continuously for an hour in extreme heat, we'll take a short break so couples can cool off, grab some water, and recharge before heading to a second location. It makes the experience much more enjoyable, especially during the hottest months of the year.
For the second half of Cameron and Grayson's session, we made our way up to Hunt's Tomb, one of my favorite overlooks inside Papago Park. As we made our way there, the sun began its descent toward the horizon, bringing with it one of my favorite parts of photographing in Arizona: golden hour.
Arizona sunsets have an incredible warmth that bathes the desert landscape in rich gold, orange, and soft pink tones. That beautiful light creates a unique glow that I find incredibly romantic and intimate. It's one of the reasons I always schedule engagement sessions around sunset whenever possible. Not only is the light more flattering, but it also adds a timeless, emotional quality to the images that perfectly complements a couple's love story. When that warm light reflects off the iconic red rocks of Papago Park, it creates a breathtaking backdrop that simply can't be replicated at any other time of day.
This part of the evening is perfect for some of my favorite epic poses. We captured romantic lifts, including Cameron carrying Grayson across the threshold before they shared a kiss. We also had some fun with another favorite pose where Cameron lifted Grayson over his shoulder while she proudly showed off her engagement ring. It's playful, unique, and always gets genuine reactions.

Nearby, I found a large rock overlooking the landscape. I had Cameron and Grayson stand together on top while I climbed down below to create a dramatic perspective. With the glowing evening sky behind them, they gave me a few more serious, cinematic expressions, and those quickly became some of my favorite images from the entire session.

As the sun continued to set, I had them slow dance together while holding each other close. This time, instead of Cameron doing the talking, I asked Grayson to tell him what she was most looking forward to about marrying him. Once again, the camera disappeared as they focused entirely on one another. It's moments like these that remind me why I love using prompts instead of rigid poses. When couples are talking, laughing, and reflecting on their relationship, the emotions become genuine—and those are the photographs that they'll treasure for years to come.

Some of my favorite photographs from the evening came during these quiet moments. I intentionally focused on their hands as they embraced because hands tell such an important part of a couple's story. From the engagement ring to the way they naturally held each other, those little details often become some of the most meaningful photographs.

The Arizona weather gave us one final surprise. It had been slightly overcast for much of the evening, but just before sunset the clouds opened and beautiful golden light poured across Papago Park. The warm colors against the dramatic red rock formations created an incredible backdrop that perfectly finished the session.

To end every engagement session, I usually pull out a blanket that has become one of my favorite pieces of gear. It has a towel backing attached underneath, which keeps it easy to clean from the desert dirt and cactus debris—a lesson I learned after ruining more blankets than I'd like to admit! It allows couples to comfortably sit together for some of the most intimate photographs of the entire evening.
Cameron and Grayson cuddled together, laughed, snuggled close, and simply enjoyed the final moments of their engagement session as the sun disappeared behind the Phoenix skyline. Those quiet moments perfectly captured who they are together, and that's exactly what I hope every couple takes away from their engagement session.
I truly enjoyed spending the evening with Cameron and Grayson!
