I had the privilege of photographing an engagement session recently at Lost Dutchman State Park with Jeff and Justine, and it truly could not have been a more perfect Arizona evening. The weather was spectacular—partly cloudy skies, temperatures in the low 80s, and that soft golden-hour light that makes the desert glow. With the iconic Superstition Mountains as the backdrop, it was the ideal setting for a timeless Arizona engagement session. As the sun slowly dipped lower in the sky, the jagged cliffs of the Superstition Mountains transformed from a dusty tan into a fiery, vibrant orange-red glow. It’s one of the most epic sights in Arizona and created an absolutely stunning backdrop for the evening.

From the moment we started, Jeff and Justine brought such an effortless elegance to the session. Justine looked stunning in her flowing tan dress, while Jeff complemented her perfectly with a classic, polished look. More importantly, the two of them were incredibly natural together, which always makes for the best photographs.

I absolutely loved their outfit choices for the session. One thing I always recommend to couples is sticking with neutral, earthy tones—especially for Arizona desert sessions—and Jeff and Justine truly nailed the look perfectly. Justine’s flowing tan dress complemented the warm desert landscape beautifully, while Jeff’s light, neutral outfit paired with it effortlessly. Their wardrobe choices felt timeless and classy, while also allowing the natural beauty of the desert and the golden sunset tones to really shine through in the photographs. The soft neutral palette gave the entire session a warm, romantic feel that fit the Arizona backdrop perfectly.

I usually like to begin every engagement session with simple walking poses. It helps couples loosen up, relax, and settle into the experience before moving into more guided poses. We spent the first few minutes simply walking through the desert trails, talking, laughing, and enjoying the scenery. Those moments are often some of my favorites because they allow genuine interactions to happen naturally.

As the session progressed, I guided them into some of my favorite classic poses. One timeless setup I love is having the couple embrace from the side while looking toward the camera. It’s simple, clean, and always creates an intimate, connected portrait. From there, I had them face one another and whisper their first impressions of each other when they first met. Prompts like this almost always lead to authentic reactions and laughter, and Jeff and Justine were no exception.

Of course, no engagement session is complete without engagement ring photos. I actually enjoy sprinkling ring shots throughout the session because it gives the couple a chance to relax for a few moments while I focus on the details. It also breaks up the pace of the shoot nicely and creates beautiful storytelling images that help complete the gallery.
One of the most important things when shooting at a location like Lost Dutchman State Park is making sure to capture the scale and beauty of the landscape. The Superstition Mountains provide such an epic backdrop that you want to intentionally incorporate them into the story of the session. One pose I particularly love in these wide scenic shots is having the groom stand behind the bride with his arms wrapped around her while she gently holds onto his arms. It creates a romantic and intimate feel while still allowing the scenery to shine.

Another pose I love is having the groom pick up the bride while going in for a kiss, especially with one foot kicked back. That small detail adds so much movement and romance to the image. Combined with the setting sun behind them, it creates a cinematic feel that perfectly captures the emotion of the moment.
As sunset approached, the desert light became absolutely magical. I love photographing couples with the sun positioned between them because it creates a dreamy, whimsical glow. I’ll often have them lean in for a kiss and simply hold the moment for a few seconds. It can feel a little awkward at first, but it consistently produces some of the most breathtaking images of the entire session.

Toward the end of the evening, I had Jeff and Justine slow dance together in the middle of the desert as the light faded. I always encourage couples during these moments to talk about their future together—what they’re excited for, where they see themselves in ten years, and what they love most about one another. Those conversations create genuine emotion that translates beautifully into photographs.
I also love incorporating the desert environment into my compositions by shooting through cacti and desert brush to create soft foreground blur. It adds depth, texture, and that unmistakable Arizona atmosphere that makes sessions here feel so unique.

To wrap up the session, I brought out a blanket and had Jeff and Justine sit together for a few final intimate portraits. After an evening of walking, laughing, and posing, it’s always nice to end with a quieter, more relaxed moment. Those close-up images of couples simply being together often become some of the most meaningful photographs from the session.
Overall, this engagement session with Jeff and Justine was an absolute joy to photograph. Between the incredible desert scenery, the perfect weather, the stunning sunset over the Superstition Mountains, and the genuine connection they share, it was one of those evenings that reminds me exactly why I love documenting couples and their stories.
If you’re dreaming of an adventurous Arizona engagement session filled with epic desert views, glowing sunsets, and authentic moments, I’d love to help you plan it.
