Neeharika & Sai's Golden Hour Engagement at Papago Park

There are engagement sessions that follow the script, and then there are the ones that stick with you long after you've delivered the gallery. Neeharika and Sai's session at Papago Park is firmly in the second category.

 

A First for Me

In all my time photographing couples across the Valley, I had never photographed an Indian couple in their traditional wedding attire — and I have to say, it was one of the coolest and most visually stunning experiences I've had behind the camera. Neeharika wore a gorgeous traditional lehenga, rich in color and detail, while Sai wore a sharp, elegant sherwani. Against the red rock backdrop of Papago Park, the colors and textures of their outfits practically glowed.

Photographing traditional garments like these was a genuinely new experience for me, and it pushed me to think differently about how I frame a shot — how fabric moves, how color interacts with that famous Papago red rock, how to let the outfit itself become part of the story rather than just what the couple happens to be wearing.

 

 

Beating the Heat, Arizona-Style

Let's be honest about something: Arizona summers are no joke, and doing a full engagement session in heavy traditional fabric in that heat is not for the faint of heart. Neeharika and Sai were absolute troopers. Between the desert sun and layers of beautiful, intricate clothing, this was one of the more physically demanding sessions of the summer — and they handled it with so much grace and good humor.

We kept things moving in shorter bursts, took real breaks to cool down and rehydrate, and made sure comfort stayed part of the plan the whole time. It's a good reminder that the best engagement photos don't come from pushing through discomfort — they come from a couple who feels taken care of enough to relax and actually enjoy the experience.

 

 

The Chemistry Was Undeniable

Technical stuff aside, what really made this session special was Neeharika and Sai themselves. We worked through a variety of poses, and they nailed every single one — but more than that, I could feel how deeply connected they are. That kind of chemistry isn't something you can direct; it's just there, and my job is simply to notice it and capture it.

One of the ways I like to draw that connection out is by keeping couples moving with walking prompts throughout the session, rather than freezing them into pose after pose. It keeps the energy natural and the session from ever feeling stagnant, and it's often in those in-between moments — mid-laugh, mid-step — that the most genuine shots happen. Neeharika and Sai leaned into it beautifully.

I also love directing couples to focus on each other rather than on the camera. The moment a couple stops thinking about how they look and starts really looking at each other, that's when the session stops being about performing for a lens and starts being about the two of them. That's exactly what I wanted to capture with Neeharika and Sai, and it's where their chemistry really came through.

 

 

Why Papago Park Worked So Well

Papago Park's red buttes and sculptural rock formations gave us a backdrop that felt both dramatically Arizona and, somehow, perfectly complementary to the vibrant colors of Neeharika's lehenga and Sai's sherwani. It's proof that this desert landscape can hold its own alongside just about any style or tradition a couple brings to it.
